As I wrap up my last business day for 2025, I’ve decided it’s time to start my holidays. While business owners never truly get a break, I’ll be stepping away from the laptop and giving the phone a rest for a bit. It’s a moment to breathe and reflect.
Looking back to this time last year, the changes are remarkable. I was delivering tough news about redundancies during the holidays, while holding onto optimism for business growth that wasn’t my own. Now, that optimism is all about MY business, and it’s exhilarating.
Stepping out on my own in March 2024 was one of the most daunting things I’ve ever done. “Building my own job” brought waves of self-doubt and nerves, but also invaluable lessons:
- Family Support: I’m incredibly grateful for my family’s unwavering support. My wife has been a rock, encouraging me to go all in on The Talent Initiative, understanding the risks involved. My kids, despite their own challenges—whether it’s university, high school, or the ups and downs of being 14—have been my cheerleaders. Their hugs and high fives have kept my self-doubt at bay. I’m so thankful for them and proud of their own achievements.
- Networking: The power of connection is immense. Reaching out and rekindling relationships, some over 25 years old, has been truly special. It’s humbling to have people take the time to chat, even when there’s nothing in it for them.
- Self-Motivation: It’s tough when you’re your own boss. The drive to keep going is essential, even when it’s hard. Without the structure of a traditional job, finding motivation can be challenging, but it’s also rewarding.
- Social Media Reality: Don’t believe everything you see online. Success isn’t as effortless as it appears. Behind the polished posts, there’s hard work and struggle. It’s important to acknowledge the challenges and keep perspective. Sometimes, you have to trick yourself into feeling successful.
- Time Management: Time feels both abundant and scarce. I’m grateful for the flexibility to be present for my kids, whether it’s sports training or just being there. But there’s always that nagging question—am I doing enough? The “Right to disconnect” doesn’t quite apply to sole traders, but I’m learning to balance.
As summer calls and Santa approaches, it’s time to relax, read, and maybe revive my writing project. It’s a chance to recharge and prepare for the exciting year ahead.
Merry Christmas to all! Thank you for your support this year. I’m excited for what we can achieve in 2025. Giddy up!
